PROJECT BRIEF
Hanky Collection is a brand that draws inspiration from the historic Hanky Code phenomenon that emerged in the gay communities of New York and San Francisco in the 1970s. The brand aims to explore the evolution of this form of communication in today’s cultural and social landscape, moving beyond just sexual preferences to encompass a broader range of choices and affinities. Hanky Collection seeks to foster discussions and connections within a diverse and inclusive setting by using art, fashion, and design as communication tools.
CONCEPT EXPLORATION
Over the years, the hanky code has undergone a sociological and semiotic reinterpretation within the gay and camp culture of its time, inspiring artistic reinterpretations. The Hanky Collection brand allows us to showcase a shift in our cultural landscape. The code that served as the brand’s inspiration originally conveyed a hidden message that only those with the correct interpretation key could understand. The results of years of advocacy and activism are the ability to communicate openly, to come out, and to have visibility within mainstream culture. The brand aims to explore the interplay between people and products, particularly in artistic perfumery and creative research. In developing this project, we have mapped out a potential journey through four thematic scenarios of encounters during a summer night, from dusk to dawn.
